The Ministry of Energy and Mines reported that the firm HMV Nicaragua Pioneer will be conducting technical, economic and environmental feasibility studies to develop one of the largest photovoltaic plants in the country. The project seeks to generate 100 megawatts of clean energy, divided into four stages of 25 MW each, which would be built in Chinandega department. The solar farm will be connected to the National Interconnected System through a 138 kilo-volt transmission line.

JAPAN support

Last year, the Government of Japan donated a $12 million dollar solar farm that generates one megawatt of clean energy and last month, ProCredit Bank announced the creation of a $20 million fund to promote solar power generation among medium enterprises.

Vladimir Delagneau, President of Solar Technology (TECNOSOL), said during the last 15 years they have witness how the Nicaraguan people have made solar energy a tool to improve their quality of life. The Government of Nicaragua, NGOs and private companies promote the use of solar energy in rural areas to provide electrical coverage to isolated communities that do not have access to the conventional electrical grid.  In Nicaragua the promotion and development of renewable energy is a state policy based on the Promotion of Renewable Energy Generation Law (Law 532) approved by the National Assembly in 2005.
