The Nicaragua Energy Institute (INE) and the National Electrical Transmission Company (ENATREL) participated in a tour of the Central America Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Program (4E) and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), organized to promote the use of renewable energy and technology transfer in Central America. Ulrich Kaltenbach, 4E- GIZ Consultant, said the purpose of the tour was to establish a dialogue and greater technological exchanges with Central America to promote the use of renewable energy, energy efficiency and to encourage connecting of solar plants to the Central American electrical network. He added that countries such as Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Guatemala have had accelerated development of renewable projects that have helped to reduce pollution and improve quality of life in isolated rural areas.
Energy efficiency and renewable energy
The German Bank, the Dutch Development Bank (FMO) and the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) are funding a $50 million credit program to promote greater energy efficiency in Nicaragua. The project seeks to promote energy efficiency, renewable energy use and environmental protection measures. Funds are being allocated to the agricultural sector to encourage energy savings and sustainable use of water resources.
