The Minister of Energy and Mines, Emilio Rappaccioli announced that Nicaragua is promoting a national policy and energy efficiency law. He added that in recent years different energy efficiency measures have been developed such as application of Energy Efficiency Technical Norms (NTON), distribution of Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLS), replacement of 2 million light bulbs and 40,000 street lamps, energy audits in the public, industrial and service sector, as well as educational campaigns in public schools in the 153 municipalities of the country.
Nicaragua increased the use of renewable energy from 25% in 2006 to 52 in 2013. During the last five years the country has invested 1.5 billion dollars in promotion of clean energy projects nationwide.
