BRIEF NEWS21
During the last 7 years Nicaragua registered savings of over $ 519 million dollars through increase of renewable energy production. Emilio Rappaccioli, Minister of Energy and Mines, said development of solar, wind, hydro, geothermal and biomass projects have reduced importation of 5.4 million barrels of bunker (oil). He added that clean energy generation grew from 51% in 2013 to 54% in 2014.
He noted that “the outlook is quite positive, the rain last month generated a surplus of hydro-power and this will be supplemented by biomass power generation that begins later this month”. Rappaccioli said the Nicaragua annual energy consumption is 600 megawatts and there is a reserve of an additional 200 MW, representing 33% of the energy demand of the country.
