During the V Women Changing the World Meeting recently held in Spain, Nicaragua highlighted the importance of solar energy to the welfare of women living in rural areas. María Flores (40) inhabitant of Siuna, Northern Caribbean Autonomous Region (RACN), said her life and the lives of others in her community experienced a 180 degree turn after her participation, along with three other Nicaragua women, in a technical training program offered at Barefoot College in India. “During six months we learned about the use, installation and maintenance of solar energy panels. This experience improved the education of our children, increased agricultural production and promoted greater development of small businesses in our community”, Flores said.
