A report published by ENERGIA LIMPIA PARA TODOS highlights the great success of small renewable energy projects in Nicaragua. The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM), with support from the Central America Energy and Environment Alliance (AEA), has carried out 63 energy generating projects valued at $ 3.9 million. Seventeen of these projects are solar energy based, aimed at supporting productive activities in isolated communities of the country. Recently the MEM and AEA opened small photovoltaic installations in Chinandega department, changing the lives of dozens of fishermen, improving product quality, hygiene, and market competitiveness.

Masaya bakeries

The “Promoting the use of Solar Energy in the Food Sector\” project was completed last year in Masaya department and included 8 businesses led mostly by women. The experience is considered one of the most successful of the sector, promoting high levels of female empowerment and greater business productivity.

Fifty-one (51) small businesses and furniture manufacturers of Masaya are receiving training on the use of solar energy and several solar and biomass hybrid plants have been installed. The 2013 Climate scope report published by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Bloomberg, highlighted Nicaragua\’s leadership in the promotion and development of small eco-friendly businesses that producing major changes in the country. .
