César Zamora, IC Power country manager, said Nicaragua exported five million dollars in energy through the Central American Electrical Interconnection System (SIEPAC) last month. He added there are great opportunities in the regional market and IC POWER is ready to seize them. “We have been working for two years on feasibility studies for expansion of the Amayo Wind Farm Phase III to make the most of SIEPAC and to sell energy throughout the region”. During the first four months of this year the Central American countries, through SIEPAC, increased regional energy transactions by 211.4% compared to the same period last year.

Support for clean energy

Luis Alberto Moreno, President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), reaffirmed the support of the financial institution for the Nicaragua effort to transform the energy matrix through use of renewable sources. During the Sustainable Energy for All Summit (SE4ALL) organized by the United Nations, the IDB President said Nicaragua is a model for the region in transforming its energy matrix through use of renewable sources. “Nicaragua is experiencing an unprecedented transformation in its energy matrix that serves as an example of the transformation that our region has seen in the last 50 years,” Moreno said.

Comprehensive Approach

He added that the comprehensive approach of the Nicaragua National Sustainable Electrification and Renewable Energy Program (PNSER) is increasing electrical service coverage, promoting greater energy generation from renewable sources and energy efficiency. “With the leadership of the Nicaragua government the IDB, along with seven other multilateral organizations, intends to increase electrical service coverage from 73% in 2012 to 85% in 2017. Likewise there are plans to increase renewable energy share of the energy matrix to 93% in 2026”.
