Nicaragua continues to promote the use of renewable energy as state policy. During the last 5 months of this year, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) has granted 4 hydropower generating licenses to HIDROENERGY NICARAGUA SA. The projects include the “Santa Elisa” (8.7MW) and “La Esperanza” hydroelectric project (7 MW) in Matagalpa department; and “El Mono” (3.3MW) and “La Colombina” hydroelectric project ( 4.2MW ) in Jinotega department.
Another project underway
A new $62 million hydroelectric plant with a generating capacity of 17.3 MW will begin operating in mid-2014 in Nicaragua. The Larreynaga plant in the northern municipality of Jinotega will start generating electricity in the next three months .
