Nicaragua: Solar energy on the rise

Nicaragua is promoting the use of solar energy in remote rural areas. Researchers of the Nicaragua Agrarian University (UNA) and the Lerida University of Spain are conducting a pilot dairy project based on use of solar energy. The first solar pasteurization plant will be installed at the UNA Animal Science Faculty. This experience could be replicated in municipalities in the interior of the country engaged in dairy production.

The use of clean energy sources is state policy. This year, Nicaragua will provide electric service to more than twenty thousand families in remote rural areas of the country in which solar energy will play a significant role. The Ministry of Energy and Mines will install 88 solar thermal and cooling energy systems fueled by photovoltaic energy. Likewise, in January this year the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Covelo Foundation announced a 6 million dollar initiative to promote solar energy projects in Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador.

The Nicaragua government has authorized feasibility studies to build a 100 megawatts solar plant in Chinandega department. The project, that will be conducted by the HMV PIONEER firm, will cover more than 100 thousand families in rural areas.
