*** Year after after year dozens of young people from Hamburg, Germany, come to visit poor communities in Leon, Nicaragua, to install solar panels and share their knowledge in solar technology development. This is a small project that is generating major changes in the lives of rural families.
German technology equipment and solar systems are changing the lives of poor families in remote rural areas of Nicaragua. The Nicaragua – German Co. (ENICALSA) founded in 2002, is an example of various renewable energy projects being implemented in Nicaragua, that are transforming the quality of life of the population. ENICALSA is supporting the agriculture sector through installation of pumps for irrigation and livestock, drinking water supplies, equipment for health centers, hospitals and schools among others.
Public-Private Partnerships
The success of ENICALSA community projects is based on the public-private partnership model and cooperation with German and Nicaraguan universities. Solar projects are also being carried out in conjunction with students from different schools in Germany, including Gesamtschule Blankenese and Erich Kästner, which every year spend their vacations in Nicaragua working hand in hand with the people in community-based projects using solar energy.
